From our beginnings, Califia Farms has made the protection of bees and other pollinators a priority.
We source primarily from a single group of California grower-processors that owns and manages its own beehives. As a result, our growers are able to control, monitor and improve bee health on farm rather than outsourcing pollination services.
Our farmers also implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as a central practice of daily farm operations. IPM greatly reduces the need for herbicide, fungicide and pesticide use which can harm bees.
Finally, because bees require diverse sources of food year-round, our lead grower offers its hives unique access to large areas of wild forage throughout the year. In addition to other crops, our farmers' bees rest on:
- 14,000 acres of California foothills ranchland,
- 150 acres of Alsike and Strawberry Clover pasture,
- 70,000 additional leased acres of irrigated and native forage.
At Califia, we know we can do more and better. We are in active conversation with our growers and the Pollinator Partnership about how we can further prioritize bee health at farm level.
